Here is a mature, intelligent book on being the head of the family which deserves the widest readership -- not only by fathers but by the distaff side of the family as well and certainly by all who have to understand and counsel families, particularly priests The Head of the Family is a happy relief from other recent attempts on this subject which pose ideals seemingly unattainable by ordinary mortals. Author Barbeau's approach is positive and sober, realistic and practical. Apt quotations confirm the positions he takes. Even when arbitrary, his views command respect. This literate appreciation of what it means to be ""head of the family"" sees the father in his various roles as Creator, as lover, as Christ, as breadwinner and as saint. Within this framework, the responsibilities of ""every man"", not just biological fathers, are described in a perspective which creates a much more penetrating and large-screen view of fatherhood. Here is a book on family life which stands out as one of the best to date. Men's organizations would do well to make it basic resource material for continuing study. Any man will benefit from having read it.
