Rebel Riley, the Ski Club's best junior skier, finds himself involved in an old competition when Duke Foster returns after two years to challenge Rebel's status. Duke was a flashy skier who was willing to take dangerous gambles in order to put himself in the lead, while Rebel was just as interested in insuring that his team win the league championship. For a while Rebel considers the challenge a personal one, but his sense of team spirit is overriding, and it is not very surprising that when he controls his skiing to help the team he walks away with the personal honors as well. The importance of the competition between the two thirteen year old boys seems a little exaggerated, and the obvious moral offers slight suspense for readers. The descriptions of ski techniques and competitive skiing may appeal to devotees of the sport.
