The collected columns of Cleveland Amory, president of the Fund for Animals, show little of the righteous indignation of his usual pronouncements; instead, these are folksy responses to the slightly dizzy questions of his readers. ""Do you believe in ESP between people and animals?"" Yes, and Beatrice Lydecker even charges for the service. ""Is it true that chimpanzees can paint?"" Yes. ""As a matter of fact, there is. . . an artist who goes by the name of Pablo--no relation, however."" ""What is the most remarkable achievement you know of made by a dog?"" Radar, a German shepherd, co-pilots a plane. Other oddities: a skiing dachshund, the dragon of Indonesia, walking fish. Besides telling how cats purr, why breeders look like their dogs, and the cheapest form of animal birth control (a leash), there are some staggering statistics: ""two-thirds of all living creatures on earth are beetles."" Amory makes little jokes (Why do beavers build dams? Not just for the hell of it) and mentions cases of abuse only when they relate to the question. Monkeyshines for his minions.
