MY BROTHER'S KEEPER

The ""Brother"" is Dr. Samuel Sheppard, convicted murderer of one of our most publicized murder trials. Essentially ""Steve's story,"" this was written in collaboration with Paul Holmes, author of The Sheppard Murder Case (1961, p. 446) and covers much of the same material but from an intimate and of course subjective point-of-view. Dr. Sheppard's objective is to record his own reactions during and subsequent to the murder and trial. Therefore we view in retrospect the varied aspects of the case along with the devastation of a family-two suicides; the apparent aberrations of police and press, particularly the press- the ""modern refinement of ancient trial by ordeal--"" trial by newspaper and the unceasing efforts on the family's part to exon-rate Sam. The case is now in the hands of the ""Court of Last Resort"" with moves being made to obtain a writ of habeas corpus which must preclude possible parole to assure a rehearing. Mr. Sheppard asks the reader to bear in mind that he believes his brother is innocent. Although Sam remains a rather nebulous figure, Steve's recollections, research and arguments are definite enough and stubbornly persuasive. Interesting in its ""eye-witness"" approach.
