KIRKUS REVIEW

From Homer to contemporary writing, this book ranges through every facet of Western literature in an attempt to establish a coherent pattern of systematic reading. By planning a comprehensive list of titles, Mr. Fadiman hopes to guide the reader away from mental bankruptcy, too often the end toward which well-educated people today are headed. His introductory notes are designed to capture the interest and curiosity of the reader and propel him toward the books which he suggests. This is not a reading plan for the scholar, but for ""everyman""- the high school student who can go no further in formal education, the college graduate who has bypassed the treasures of literature, the average layman who is reasonably literate, but needs a stimulating refresher.
