A pennysworth of ditties with an old-time air, aping traditional rhymes but tending to be sugary and in fact preoccupied with confection: sassafras, ginger beer, gooseberry pie, sugar hearts and lemon tarts; ""Peppermint candies are six for a penny/ But true love and kisses one cannot buy any."" The fond, country style illustrations depict assorted foxes in a variety of period poses and scenes; all told, they have more flavor than the rhymes which are as interesting as Necco wafers.
