Col. Meek has won his audience with well-authenticated animal stories in the past and this, a well-paced trotting story set in Kentucky and Florida and along the tracks, won't fall to win more applause. Chub, who is slightly crippled, and his brother Roger, live on Bellaire Farm with their grandfather, Lou Bellaire. But it is long since that Lou's finances have thinned out and a misdemeanour on the part of one of his agents has caused a temporary suspension from racing. Lou decides to wait out his time, but when the chance for a comeback comes, it is on Chub's shoulders that it falls. Roger must go in the army and Chub, if unwillingly at first, sees the new colt, Bellfarm Star, through training in Florida and lightning wins at sulky races that take them to the highest stakes and a new security.
