It's the soccer version of one of the oldest plots around--and only for kids who can really follow the play. Clumsy, soccer-crazy Bruno bear, the new animal in town, tries out with Tex's Tigers; becomes the team's substitute goalkeeper (there, he'll be out of harm's way); and after disgracing himself in the big match with Leroy's Lions, rebounds and scores the winning goal. McNaughton (Anton B. Stanton and the Pirates, The Great Zoo Escape, etc.) pictures the soccer-mad felines and such with his usual comic/satiric exuberance; but that, plus his inventive comic-strip breakdown of the match, just about exhausts the book's attractions.
