For young people (say ten and up) interested in children of other lands, this book is different, and has an unusual angle. The boys in a little village of Bali want an orchestra of their own. With the help of the author (who has done an adult book on Balinese music) whom they call Big Brother, they acquire a miniature set of instruments and a rarely gifted teacher. With amazing patience they learn to master their instruments and play well, and ultimately are invited to the Rajah's wedding. Happy little details of great charm introduce other games and customs, some of which have universal appeal, such as kite flying, fishing, etc. But the special appeal is for those interested in music. In spite of the format, it has much of value for the lower teens.
