SUBMARINE!

Shooting the breeze with a submariner makes for an exciting and interesting report on undersea activities in the Pacific, 1942-45. For it's a record of honored ships and ""brethren of the silent service"" which displays the dramatic life they led on patrol, in mine laying, reconnaissance, and fighting, as they outthought and outmaneuvered the enemy and as the human unit fitted into the personality of their sea-going home which was often their coffin. Aboard the USS Trigger (SS237) the author headed from Mare Island to Pearl Harbor, knew the early days of defective ""fish"", learned the story of Mush Morton and the solo heroism of the Wahoo, and followed the saga of the Sea Wolf, the Harder, the Archerfish and other brave craft and their daring exploits. There is the gadgeteering (or how to have ice cream under water), the thrill of battle, of danger (from our planes and destroyers as well as the Japs), the suspense when the chances are their ship may not carry them to safety -- all adding up to a whale of a good naval account.
