Story of an Irish Catholic family living in upstate New York, with the focus on the eldest of the children, Viola, from childhood on. Sensitive, restless, fanciful, Viola goes through the excitements and let-downs of younger years, the worries over her grades, the conflicts with her father offset by the support of her mother. There are her first beaux, graduation, bid to a sorority, then Pratt Institute to train to be a teacher. Securing a position in a Catholic college, Viola responds to the serenity there and is drawn to the idea of becoming a nun. There's a natural quality here, a warmth and sincerity which has appeal beyond the Catholic market. But for younger readers, the interest would be largely among Catholic girls.
