Isabelle the Itch is back, still ten and exasperating, but she seems dazzling to Guy Gibbs, an eight-year-old newcomer with hopes of shedding his goody-goody skin. Easily impressed, Guy quickly enlists her support in changing his image. Greene, as always, maneuvers the central two with a clean, light touch: they talk and act like kids getting to know each other. This time, though, the others, especially a gifted younger sister, an eccentric grandma, and irritating Mary Eliza Shook--add little to the proceedings. Ultimately, Guy solves his own problem (protecting a dog from some toughs) and Isabelle, with a few tidy insights, starts to curb some of her impulses. Balanced and amusing but less inspired than the original.
