One of those period historical romances always in full voice about Emma Tremayne (British) who teeter-totters between her loyalty to her father (she later learns he's an agent) and her new love for a young Frenchman, Lucien, whom she meets in Paris and who takes her to his home in Avignon as governess to his young stepbrother. Had Lucien's father been sent to his death by hers? Now her father is killed--was he betrayed by Lucien's mother, said to have loved him? The time is around the Napoleonic wars: passions are tossed from side to side; and there's lots of the garni the genre demands.
