EMBROIDERY AND COLOUR

Color perception is a highly personal, abstract experience but this astute discussion of the use and effects of color on fabric is precise, generally applicable, and--best of all--amply illustrated. Although aware of symbolic associations, Howard concentrates on natural patterns and combinations--in clouds, shells, land and seascapes-- and emphasizes the importance of close observation for the selection of appropriate fabrics and colors. In examining hand- and machine-stitched works, she indicates the significance of near and opposing tones, pure colors and greyed ones, and shows a fine appreciation of line and shape in her analysis of intentional distortion, shadowing, depth illusions and textural variations. Although it's regrettable that all embroidery samples are not in color, the many that are stand out, and even the black-and-whites are eye-catching.
