The spirit of Russian sanctity and its influence on the development of Russia through the ages is exemplified here through biographical sketches of ten great saints, one for each century since the 10th, recognized as such by the Russian Orthodox Church. The author establishes that ""Holy Russia"" has produced a very distinctive type of sanctity which has left its mark on the Russian soul. The biographies, as well as the introductory and concluding essays, are noteworthy for their perceptiveness, historical and religious scholarliness, and extremely interesting style. The saints studied include St. Vladimir, Sts. Boris and Gleb, St. Theodosius, St. Alexander Nevski, St. Sergius, St. Nil Sorski, St. Philip of Moscow, St. Tikhon and St. Seraphin. All interested in the ecumenical movement, as well as those who wonder about persisting influences of Christianity in Russia today, will find this book very rewarding reading.
