The author who can authentically set her stories in the waters of the China Sea or in the exotic haven of Singapore, now chooses the Philippine Islands as a new Eastern ground. The Ellis family were used to life on the edge of the jungle. Until lovely Elizabeth Carson arrives, the most serious problem 14 year old Millicent had to face was her weight. But now a new girl was here -- perhaps to challenge Cent's enviable position in the spotlight. Only after a near tragedy in which Cent goads Elizabeth into attempting a dangerous jump, do the two girls come to know each other and dissipate their false images. United by a new understanding as well as the prospect of uncovering the mystery of the strange, disappearing, American doctor, the girls develop a strong friendship. With the help of Pacita, Dr. O'Dell's daughter, Cent and Elizabeth uncover evidence clearing the doctor's name of charges levelled against him after World War II -- unfounded charges of collaboration with the Japanese. The log book proving the doctor's innocence is unearthed and Cent can take a good deal of credit for the happy results. Here is a plot with action, well-drawn characters and vivid local color -- all destined to gratify the female audience.
