THE GENTLE WARRIOR

By

Publisher: Harcourt, Brace

The story of Dorothea Lynde Dix deserves wider publicity than it receives. A century ago this ""saint"" was known throughout the world, as one of the greatest and most tireless philanthropists. She gave all she had in strength and money in her crusades for the afflicted. Although of humble and painful beginnings, frail in health, she used herself generously to further the cause of free education for the underprivileged, but her greatest crusades were for the mentally ill, whose treatment she helped change here and in Europe- and she had a part in establishing some 32 mental hospitals, and school hospitals for the afflicted, the blind, the deaf, the dumb. Exceptionally interesting biography of a little known figure; revealing social background study from 1814-64. The best book Corinne Lowe has done, and one that has a quality of inspiration. If it were not illustrated, it might find a place on lists for young adults -- for the content certainly rates adult listing.
