KIRKUS REVIEW

Cornelia Meigs writes so pleasantly and knows her Colonial background so thoroughly that it is too bad the plots of her stories are not more absorbing. This one presents America of 1755 -- the story centers around sixteen-year-old Tom and his younger sister, who live near Philadelphia. At the instigation of Benjamin Franklin, Tom becomes a ""mounted messenger"", and carries letters to various important people, first in New England and later through Virginia into the unsettled country beyond. The picture of the period is well-drawn, and the account of Braddock's defeat is interesting, but more action would help enliven the book as a whole.
