The book offers short sketches of famous people in Chinese history starting with ConfUcius and continuing up to Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Tse-tung, and Chou En-lai. Combined with descriptions of their work and some fictionalization of episodes in their lives, an attempt has been made to give an indication of the outlines of Chinese history and culture. Unfortunately, however, by dealing with Just certain aspects of a few men's lives throughout the lengthy span of Chinese tradition, the material seems too choppy and poorly organized to give a coherent picture. Other books by this author (Ancient China, 1964, The Land of the Chinese People. 1960) and Elizabeth Seeger's Pageant of Chinese History (1962), offer better introductions to the history of China and exemplify more clearly the work of these men.
