The record of a fascinating, often fatal profession, in unassuming recapitulation (which does not attempt competition with the Ellsberg book). Eddie Bushnell worked largely in the Montorey area, laying and repairing lines, pipes and hoppers for the canneries. Here is the technique of diving, with easy-does-it a first commandment; the dangers of fouled up air lines, rough waters, the bends; particular jobs from salvaging a blonde's pocketbook with her mortgage money to the body of a dead woman; the loss of a finger underseas- and almost of a life; the lure of big money in sunken treasure which stayed sunken... No primadonna performance here, but a plain spoken, plain dress account of particular interest to men and boys.
