Second of Gardner's Dragon Circle yarns (Dragon Sleeping, 1994) about a suburban streetful of families suddenly transported by an ancient dragon to a fantasy world where magic works. The main plot, what there is of it, has the dragon orchestrating some sort of arcane contest, though we never learn precisely what. Various subplots detail the characters' fairly aimless tussling over possession of ``dragon's eyes,'' jewels with weird magic properties. Then, in the sub-subplots, we discover that the evil wizard Nunn already controls two eyes; his brother Obar, now one of the good guys, has another; suburbanite Mrs. Smith controls a fourth, giving her the powers of a (good) witch. Also helping the good guys are a chatty Raven, young Nick Smith and his magic sword, and Jason Dafoe, friend of the treelike Oomgosh, into which he will eventually metamorphose. Other suburbanites actively assist Nunn. And former high-school principal Evan Mills is possessed by two beingsZachs, formerly Nunn's familiar; and the wizard Roxwho will stop at nothing to acquire eyes for themselves. A meandering, adolescent, uncompelling installment, packed with incident but forming no graspable whole.
