THE FIRST BOOK OF BRIDGES

A thoroughgoing survey, that measures up well, for a younger level, with All about Bridges which the famous bridge-builder David Steinman wrote for Random House this fall. Carefully, Mr. Peet enumerates all types of bridges- cantilever, truss, suspension, arch and so forth- and clarifies their construction by first explaining basic techniques of modern bridge-building, the cofferdam and pneumatic caisson. And, after a sampling of some of the world's most important crossings, casts a shrewd eye to the future with a comment or two on the work now being done by such as Mr. Steinman.
