THE VULNERABLE AMERICANS

This is some very motivated research into all the various ways in which fraud operates in America today; book-wise, it's one of the Vance Packard by-products, and Gentry monitors the scene, scolds a society which permits multifarious malpratices such as the ""deceptive TV commercial, the rigged quiz show, the slack-fill package, the kited check"" etc. etc. Cease and desist. Huckstering which is only hoaxtering, and all kinds of advertising (double talk; false comparatives; visual illusions-- food packaging for example; door to door and mail sells; free lessons-- don't go to Arthur Murray in a hurry; fund raising;) are examined. Then there's boosting in stores; bilking in banks; credit cards and charge accounts (a $60.00 a week secretary toted up $86,249 in 511 areas); retail swindles of all kinds with only spotty protective coverage by the FTC, FDA, CU and other regulative agencies..... This expose is really a very solid exposition of new variants of old confidence games and the one who's born every minute usually likes to read all about it.
