KIRKUS REVIEW

A rather overwhelming assemblage of information, chronologically and topically ordered, surveying the history of music, instruments, vocalization, rhythm, notation, forms, as well as the works of leading musicians. It opens with primitive music, goes through the Orient, Greece and Rome, on to the Middle Ages and church as well as secular music, the Renaissance, the 17th century-age of opera, down through the classical, the romantic, to the modern. Comprehensive, though the emphasis seems at times disproportionate; thorough, considering its scope, but rather dull in handling.
