Vobh’s fantasy series-starter follows a man whose new job entails helping others in their dreams.
As the story opens, Proto finds himself in a “bluish hallway” with intermittent doors that lack doorknobs. The 27-year-old is initially confused, but soon settles on the notion that he’s having a lucid dream. Soon, he makes his way to a pub called Somnus’ Palace. Its friendly proprietor—Somnus, the Lord of Dreams—explains that Proto, like many of the pub’s patrons, has the power to visit other people’s dreams and assist them with their problems. Proto starts out as a provisional visitor with mentor Astrid guiding him through the process. They step through one of the knobless doors and enter someone’s dream state; there, Proto tries to steer the dreamer in the right direction regarding a tough choice they’re currently facing in the “breathing world.” Visiting requires a touch of subtlety; one can’t stand out too much, as that could wake the dreamer up. Proto gradually hones his skills, enjoying occasional downtime at Somnus’ Palace and making new friends; he’s somewhat shaken up, however, when more than one dream visit hits too close to home. Vobh’s tale is a relatively lighthearted endeavor. The first half consists of Proto visiting assorted dreams—set in a spaceship under attack, for instance, or among jousting medieval knights—while under supervision. In between visits, characters banter endlessly, discussing drinks or giving Proto mildly insulting nicknames, such as “Slow Bro” and “Spunky.” However, the story is energized by welcome glimpses into Proto’s initially mysterious life, and a few members of the supporting cast stand out, as well, including Astrid, bartender Lilac, and “shadowseer” Dahlia, who can observe dreamers’ memories on a screen called the Shadowcaster. There’s minimal conflict for much of the narrative, as Proto is essentially a newbie, surrounded by generally amiable coworkers. However, the final act throws everything into a tailspin with a shocking plot twist and a sudden, crucial dilemma.
A breezy and ultimately enthralling adventure tale with likable characters.
