Poor Mr. Wolf is hungry for meat but all he has to eat are roots and berries, as his would-be victims can always outsmart him on a hunting expedition. After the goat, goose and turtle escape his clutches by sending him home for a fork, bib and spoon respectively, and a horse maneuvers him into the perfect posture for being kicked in the head, Mr. Wolf satisfies his ego if not his appetite by going out ""hunting"" for roots and berries. A disappointing and silly ending, but Landshoff's sketches of the gullible, self-satisfied wolf underline the simple irony of his position, and his obvious obtuseness does give beginning readers a chance to feel superior.
