An impressive amount of information on the history, varieties, growth, processing, and uses of corn are packed into this slim ""Read-alone"" title. From ethanol used in gasohol to dextrins used to smooth the paper for books, the author shows how corn products are important in nearly everything we use. Sweet corn and popcorn are described along with dent, flint, waxy, Indian, and flour corn. The black drawings touched with corn yellow are lively and humorous. Minor complaints: the explanation of the rotor portion of the combine is not particularly clear; a glossary would have helped beginning readers with words like ""glucose,"" ""insecticide,"" ""insulation,"" ""furrows,"" and ""ferment.
