Great friends Brownie the girl and Pearl the cat set out one snowy winter day to see the sights. “Brownie has her handbag. Pearl has her mouse. They look very smart.” In turn, they visit the hat shop, the shoe shop and the cupcake shop, trying on the oversized wares in the first two and enjoying treats in the last, down to the last crumb, before going home to nap. “Sights are good... / but home is better.” As always, Rylant provides just enough text to develop her characters and her plot, making this a satisfying read-aloud for toddlers and read-alone for beginning readers. Biggs’s thick-lined, digital cartoons assume a pleasing muted tone for the outside, snowy scenes while allowing his protagonists to pop. Like Brownie and Pearl, this book and its collaborators are “very smart.” (Picture book/early reader. 2-6)
