Edited by the author of this fall's The nquiet Grave (Harper), this is a group of short stories from the English magazine, HORIZON, and an interesting collection with values that range from the cosmopolitan to the clever-clever, the original to the intellectual. There is no illusion here, much that is drab, depressing, sardonic or so. Notable for ine are Alfred Berle's I LIVE ON MY WITS, Philip Toynbee's INTERMENT OF A LITERARY . There are stories of a TB sanatarjum, an insane anylum, a woman going mad, a boy who is off center. Literarily familiar names and the expected quality in the suggestive subtley of Elizabeth Bowan, the allegory of William Sansom, the delicacy of Logan Pear Smith, the realism of Rhys Davies. Cyrill Connolly has achieved a certain prestige as critic, scholar. impresario of original talent -- here borne out.
