This latest in Harper's Modern Science series deals with the air around-- and beyond -- . Defining meteorology as the physical science which deals with ""oceans of air"", as related to weather forecasting, which derives from that science, the author work: steadfastly ahead at answering fascinating questions. What is climate? Weather? What precisely, are such phenomena as jet streams, troposphere, stratosphere? And one chapter in particular which deals with hurricanes, thunderstorms, and nadoes, will be of particular interest to Americans who witness these plagues almost yearly. Other sections interesting to the lay reader will be those dealing with forecasting itself--how far it has come, how it can deal with air pollution as well as weather, and what its prospects are. Technical material is compensated for by lucidity, and brevity, of style. Helpful glossary of terms.
