SMOULDERING FIRE

The Miss Duncle books will set the key for sales -- and rentals -- of this new book, though customers should know that it is in less humorous vein. Scotland, the setting, good local color, leisurely pace, an idealized romance, written with gentle charm. The story of a romance of youth coming to new fire when the man and woman meet again, years later, under different circumstances, -- and of how sheer chance endangers the woman's ultimate happiness and a mysterious disappearance solves her problem. The appeal of the story lies more in its telling than in its plot.
