In spite of the war background, a peaceful sort of story of army wives, their problems, and ingenuous Frances who comes of age amongst them. Unworldly, unsophisticated, Frances frees herself from her bondage to an aunt and has her first fligh at independence in Scotland where friendship with the village people, and the wives and their officer husbands of a new army encampment, add to her knowledge of human relationships. She falls in love with Guy, who inadvertently turns her from him and has to go chasing her to London, where be saves her during a blitz. Gently ingratiating.
