....the great-great-grandmother of the Scotch-French Alix, and Canadian Wallis Glendinning, is concluded as these two meet in London, during World War II, when Wallis-with his closest friend Roger- are members of the R.C.A.F. and death is at all times ominously imminent for those in the air. Wallis falls in love with Alix, and Roger with an English girl- Caroline- whom he marries, and these four make up a close formation throughout the war years-although Alix is unwilling to commit herself, in the superstitious fear that she may hurt Wallis. Roger is shot down and there is a difficult aftermath; Wallis is reported missing - but comes back alive via Sweden; Caroline is killed, in an air raid; and, on a last mission, for Wallis, Roger goes down- so that the end of war takes Wallis back to Canada and leaves Alix with the choice to follow him.... The shaky to shattering effects of the war in the air on those who flew- and those who waited- lends its seriousness to an attractive romance, and while not subtle, it is certainly susceptible.
