Pleasant family picture, slight on plot and long on atmosphere, in a romance of Scotland, a place and its inhabitants. Old Celia leaves Dunnian to a child as yet unborn, cutting off Mark, the eldest son, who alone of the family knows of it. Deb, a distant relative, comes to Dunnian, instinctively hates it -- but -- through Mark's eyes and words, learns to love it and through Dunnian, to love Mark. Tessa, too, has a claim on Mark -- but she learns that it is really Dunnian she wants, which leaves him free for Deb,. Young Calia, out off from savoring her inheritance by the war, finds an overseas family connection to carry on Dunnian's faded glories. Less humor and originality than some of her earlier books, but a pleasant story.
