THE STORY OF ROMAN BRITAIN

The author of another exceptional study of ancient history (The Story of Ancient Athens, (1960, p.962, J-236) recreates in detail the city and country life in Britain during the period of Romanization (43 A.D. through the 5th century). The author's careful and exacting research was worthwhile; it enabled him to select aspects which would interest young readers and omit others. Mr. Barker gives much attention, for example, to the daily habits of the people-- their art work, their culture, their farming methods, etc.--, and omits military detail. This rendering of ancient history is lively and should provoke young readers to look further. Instructive drawings and clear photographs support the text. Larger print would have improved an already excellent book.
