From a city background in Belfast to Country Kerry is a big change for 13-years old Kathy, but it's her own choice instead off going off to a fine boarding school after her parents' deaths. The story- its incidents. sights smells and personalities are as Irish a its setting, as Kathy overcomes local expectations that she is a snob, and some slight resentment that her mother deserted to the hated north of Ireland. And she finds the turbulent family doings all to her taste. Not very much happens but enough to carry the local color, and the people are real and alive. There are school days and holidays, new friends and old, enmities to be overcome, (though her uncle's wife never accepts her), and Kathy has no reason to regret her decision. Readers will find this picture of life in County Kerry and the Blaskets enchanting, and the brogue of some of the dialogue adds-rather than detracting- from the charm.
