AUTUMN'S BRIGHTNESS

Publisher: Macmillan

Romance enters in -- to a widowed Quaker's life- when 52 year old Diligence Fuller comes to New York City to visit her worldly cousin, Elmira. She discovers the city through Durand Smith, who makes up for his lack of money by friendliness, enthusiasm and understanding and gives meaning to Elmira's shallow world, and when Diligence returns to Kendal, Rhode Island, she doesn't stay long but the next trip to the City sends her scurrying home for fear of Durand's serious intent. Her qualms and her Quaker honesty send her flying to look for Durand when he fails to make a promised visit and he is assured of a rapid recovery from an accident with Diligence's admission she will spend the rest of her life with him. A young in heart heroine for an unpresuming, nice story makes pleasant fare for the most conservative.
