A first rate story of Let The Hurricane Rear (Rose Wilder Lane) type, pioneering with a human adjustment problem at its core. Montana is the background, the period, that of the passing of the homesteading act by Congress, with a resultant influx of all sorts and conditions of men -- and women. The struggle for existence against the ravages of Nature; the struggle for sanity against the eccentricities of human nature, in the story of a young couple who brought their small son into the wilds that they might live their own life and not the life of a domineering mother. A one room cabin seemed spacious, as opposed to a house supervised by the widowed mother; when Fate took an ugly twist, and it was necessary to bring her west to join them. This little tragedy in human relations works itself out against the less personal tragedies of hall and storm and tempest, and the whole makes good reading.
