KIRKUS REVIEW

A sockdolager history of show business. Panoramas the half century from vaudeville, early moving pictures, legitimate theatre, night clubs, open air shows, to radio, talking pictures and TV, --in crisp terms from Variety show biz' own outspoken registry. The acts, the names, the tunes, the musicians, the box office, the labor troubles, the dances, the opulent growth for three decades, and the kiss of death that killed off vaudeville; World War I and its effect on the entertainment world; the great, flashy days of the twenties and what happened in the thirties; World War II and present day events -- all are concentrated into vivid condensation which loses none of the color or excitement of the eras. What seems to be a complete roster should provide excellent reference, with a glossary and index to round it out.
