ST. JOHN'S GOSPEL

Thanks to his former student, C. F. Evans, a life work of the brilliant Oxford expositor, Dr. R. H. Lightfoot, was rescued from the limbo to which its not quite completed state would have consigned it at the time of that scholar's death six years ago. That the result is a substantial contribution to our understanding of the Fourth Evangelist is witnessed by the two editions through which the volume went in England, and now by this third issue in an Oxford Paperback especially to meet the demand in the United States. In the 75 page Introduction, the compiler has taken a series of essays on various problems and facets of the Fourth Gospel which Dr. Lightfoot had prepared for diverse occasions, and woven them into a coherent whole, while yet being careful that the result should be Dr. Lightfoot's work. This introduction is very valuable in giving a concise treatment to many problems concerning the Fourth Gospel. The whole book is really in English, so that those who understand no Greek, or cannot follow quotations in Latin, French or German, can grasp this author. The expositor is obviously a Preacher, and his attention to homilectic possibilities is stimulating. It is not an easy book. An adult Bible Class would have to mean business to use it. However, serious students of the Fourth Gospel will quickly add an American acceptance to the already proven British demand for this work.
