Well, this ""sex novel"" comes with a subsidiary guarantee as indicated in one of the author's many prefaces and/or asides: ""Wherever possible, the sections of the text which have either bored or offended you will be rewritten by the author and mailed back to you for a nominal fee to cover postage and handling."" But he kind of offsets this by providing a number of endings to the inevitable adultery of Marvin and Mandy, sharing a summer house with their respective spouses, it's a coy takeoff of funky flirtation, of fantasies where supreme desire meets super guilt, a frustrated Couples. And along with the madtrimony, there are takeoffs on the Amagansett Literary Life among the summer set. But the author gimmicks himself right into a trivia bag with his laundry lists of celebrities, his characters that argue with him, and his creature in the cellar. . . . A quasi-naughty novel. No satisfaction guaranteed.
