Fifteen brief short stories that with two exceptions share the troubled background of the Union of South Africa and are obviously written out of the author's experiences as a liberal South African and a Jew. The subtle guilt feelings, the corrosive sense of shame, the ever-present urge to commit violence engendered by racial and religious prejudice are illustrated quietly, competently and effectively in the best of these stories. The handful of stories dealing with the universal problems of growing up and falling in love are notable more for the sense of despair they generate than for their originality. Although short story collections are rarely found among the good sellers, this book has more inherent appeal than the author's two previous novels.
