FINDING OUR FATHERS

Pub Date: May 16th, 1977
Publisher: Random House

As already advertised and excerpted in New York magazine, a Jewish genealogy guide that begins with gratuitous advice (get a ring binder and manila folders) but quickly proceeds to more essential stuff. Living relatives are the first and best resource, but Rottenberg also suggests domestic and foreign repositories: record offices, passenger ships' lists, naturalization bureau data, and local agency offices. After a quickie course on Jewish history and some tips on orthographic variations in names, he notes specific archives in the US, Canada, and abroad; he also directs the reader to such useful references as the Jewish Encyclopedia. More than half the book lists family names with annotations on dates of immigration, related families, etc. Mazel Toy!
