Munro was an authority on the period of the Crusades and here concentrated his attention on a little-known aspect -- the dramatic story of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and its 87 years of conflict. Incidents, personalities, pageantry, the effect on the hardy and crude Europeans who were a part of it, and its importance in the political, social, religious and economic life of Europe. Too limited in scope for the average reader, who demands either a fictionized, sugar-coated tale of the Crusades, or a general study; but of inestimable value to the student.
