THE SECULAR CITY DEBATE by Daniel Callahan

THE SECULAR CITY DEBATE

By

Pub Date: Sept. 1st, 1966
Publisher: Macmillan

The modest purpose of this book, as the editor explains, is to record public reaction to The Secular City by Harvey Cox (Macmillan, 1965) which was, for both Protestants and Catholics, last year's most controversial and widely discussed religious book. This volume contains, then, reprints of reviews and articles commenting on Mr. Cox's book, as well as a scattering of essays written specially for the present collection. Doubtless, this publication can be justified on the basis of The Secular City's influence, already apparent, on current theological trends. The nature of the material collected, however, and the amount of patience required on the part of the reader first to adjust his own psyche to the multiplicity of viewpoints expressed and then to separate the respectable amount of wheat from the abundance of chaff, will limit this work's audience to those who are the most enthusiastic admirers of Mr. Cox.
