KIRKUS REVIEW

A frisson for dilettantes though characteristically cumbersome, this compendium consists of inflated phrases about, a few quotations from, and several photographs of each of 31 artists (plus ten compressed New Yorkers). Some of the sequences are entertaining (i.e. Miro's odds and ends ""become 'Miro's' themselves"") and shots of the artist wielding a brush are illuminating; others--portraits of the artist or his work--are empty aggrandizements. European emphasis, limited utility.
