GARDEN FLOWERS IN COLOR

A beautiful book and a good value at this amazing price -- companion volume to Vegetable Gardening in Color (but I found it less novel -- less interesting). Again the arrangement of the main text is alphabetical, so it makes virtually an encyclopedia of garden flowers, including some flowering shrubs, and among the flowers annuals, perennials, biennials. Descriptive text, definition of general locale, type of soil, culture, etc. Perhaps because I know more about flowers I was conscious of lacks -- of the need of a season chart, of a chart of related colors, etc. Brief introductory section, a final section on cultural practices, insect enemies, blights, diseases, and how to handle them, make this a useful handbook. The colored plates are superb, and one great asset will be the clarification of the species and forms, with definite recommendations.
