KIRKUS REVIEW

With the assistance of librarians, educators and other specialists, Wright has collected 22 poems and songs from around the world. Some are nursery rhymes, others are short literary poems and a few are game-songs. All are presented in English and the original language, where appropriate. The Chinese, Japanese, Farsi (Iran) and Russian rhymes appear in their original alphabets/scripts and in transliterations—a very nice touch. (An Indian rhyme, “Bathtime,” appears only in English and its original in Roman letters, and its language is not named in the otherwise excellent credits and acknowledgements section.) The rhymes read very well in English, although one translation, of the French “What is My Hand Doing?”, omits a line about spanking in the English version. A few are internationally known, like “Tingalay-O” from Jamaica, but for the most part this is a fresh crop of rhymes to share with children. There is a table of contents but no index, but this is primarily a lap and browsing book, not an academic resource. The whimsical paint-and-collage pictures are just as engaging as the rhymes.
