In the pale mantle of Hemingway- the life and times of an American vice-consul and his local mistress in Andaluz Cordoba. For here is the juxtaposition of the babbitry, governmental regime as personified by the Craggs, and the taboos and contrasting easy acceptance of the local, most bullfighting, hierarchy,- the unbreakable, insurmountable conflicts of two cultures. Young Lance Peters, in spite of diplomatic rulings, falls in love with Chelo, and, with peripatetic Angel O'Hara, sets up a menage a trois. Against this international wellbeing, the importance of Chelo's abortion, Lance's losing his job, and the climax of the Esoobar's reputation as two sons disgrace themselves in the bull ring- these bring about the end of Lance's romance and his maturing disillusion. Idyll's end for those who have not out their teeth on Hemingway.
