A comprehensive, congenial collection of tips and strategies for a happy, financially secure retirement.

In the first chapter of his debut, retired engineer and corporate executive D’Antoni includes a quality-of-life chart that graphically expresses how important it is to enjoy each passing year. Readers nearing retirement may find this a sobering thought and therefore welcome the author’s take on the critical issues facing people heading for retirement. In the first section, he looks at the inevitable effects of aging and the importance of maintaining one’s health, as well as the real challenges couples face when they realize that they’re going to be home all day. In the second and fourth sections, D’Antoni discusses the importance of keeping fully engaged in life and developing activities and relationships in order to ward off depression, loneliness and other potential health issues. In the third section, the author focuses on his love of golf and reiterates his point about discovering new interests and using them to structure the days that lie ahead. Throughout the book, he intersperses financial planning tips to help ensure a secure, worry-free retirement.  Some passages, such as a comment that the 2008 stock market crash caused some people to “sell some assets, including second or third homes,” may not speak to readers who don’t have extensive financial resources at their disposal. That said, D’Antoni has a friendly, informative writing style, and his book includes many valid and helpful ideas for protecting hard-earned assets.

An engaging primer on making retirement more enjoyable from a happy, healthy retiree.
